About Us & Our Australian Angus

Trafalgar Angus origins stem back to 1994, where we ran a beef head of 150 Angus cows at Peaceful Bay near Denmark on the south coast of Western Australia. The first venture into stud Angus world was a joint ET program performed in 1996.  Embryos from White Lakes Angus – the McKay family, were used in our trial at ET implants. In more recent times the passion to develop an Angus stud was recommenced in Busselton, 2010. In 2012, Trafalgar Angus relocated to Wildwood Road in Vasse, some 8kms directly south of Dunsborough (a similar distance from Yallingyup on the coast). We believe it’s the most Western located Angus stud in Australia, nestled in amongst the vineyards and holiday country.

We currently run 150 breeders over 700 acres, providing quality of life to our cattle for higher quality specimens. We utilise the adjoining vineyards to run the cattle after grape picking. Our initial stock was from four other Australian Angus studs and it was a slow journey to redirect their genetics and  traits to our standards. Over the years we have managed to create calves that are desirable for our standards and Angus cattle breeders. Embryo transfers became a big part of moving forward and over the last 6 years. We have sourced a significant quantity of quality embryos from both in interstate and locally – Coonamble Angus.  Locally, Esslemont Angus has provided a numerous quantity of quality cows, allowing us to push the Index numbers, whilst not compromising the end composition of the cattle.

Stud Female Locations

Currently, Trafalgar Angus has a stud herd of 150 females located at Wildwood Road and a commercial group of 50 females located near Busselton. The commercial herd plays an important role in providing recipient females for the ET program, to enhance the stud’s genetics.

FAQ

What is Angus beef Australia? Angus is the dominant beef breed in Australia for the production of high quality beef.

Is Angus beef only in Australia? No, Angus beef is worldwide, with each having different qualities based on where the cattle are raised. For example, in Australia, cattle are generally grass fed which leads to healthier cattle, leaner meat and a more earthy and beefy taste. Whereas in America, there is a greater focus on grain feeding, which leads to more marbling, which can increase tenderness. Neither one is better than the other, as it comes down to personal preference.

Where are Angus cattle found in Australia? Angus cattle are found all over Australia, mostly in higher rainfall areas, being grass fed. This includes Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and Western Australia, but they are also increasing within the Northern Territory.
